2018 Canoe Training Schedule

Beginner canoe training is mandatory for all new members so skill levels can be assessed and trips can be planned accordingly. Fees for training are very reasonable, but are non-refundable due to the commitment required and limited spaces. River training for both the Beginner and Intermediate training sessions are for two days with rain dates indicated below. All of our training sessions are very worthwhile and designed to enhance your canoe experience with the Old Salts this season while ensuring your safety!

Please note, training dates are subject to change due to weather and/or river conditions. The canoe trip schedule can be found here or will be mailed (snail mail:) to members with no email.

 

(April) Dry Land Training for New Members (1 day) 

Tuesday, April 3 from 1-3pm

Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre - Room 2, 510 Dutton Drive, Waterloo

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • equipment needed
  • how to hold a paddle
  • paddle strokes and what they do
  • getting in and out of a canoe without tipping
  • canoe safety

(April) Pool Training for New Members (2 days)

Tuesday, April 10 and April 17 from 1:30 -2:30 pm

Forest Heights Pool, Kitchener (Meet at canoe shed: 12:30 p.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • practice entry technique, ease of balance
  • practice paddle strokes
  • steering techniques

**pool training- bring a towel, canoeing clothes, water shoes, PFD, and a change of clothes. YOU WILL GET WET!

(May) Beginner/Basic-River Training (2 days - Part 1 of 2)

May 14 with rain date of May 17 at 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location:  River Bluffs Park, Cambridge (Meet at canoe shed: 11:30 a.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • outdoor training (calm water)
  • review of dry-land and pool training
  • getting in and out of canoe without tipping
  • practice paddle strokes
  • water and canoe safety

 **on the river-bring PFD, dry sack, lunch, snacks, and water.  Dress for the weather!

(May) Beginner/Basic-River Training (2 days - Part 2 of 2)

May 16 with rain date of May 18 at 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location:  Grand River, Galt to Footbridge (Meet at canoe shed: 11:00 a.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • outdoor training (moving water)
  • review of dry-land and pool training
  • getting in and out of canoe without tipping
  • practice paddle strokes
  • water and canoe safety

 **on the river-bring PFD, dry sack, lunch, snacks, and water.  Dress for the weather!

 

 

(May) Intermediate Skills Training (2 days - Part 1 of 2)

May 23 with rain date of May 24 at 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: Galt to Glen Morris (Meet at canoe shed: 11:00 a.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • water and canoe safety
  • practice paddle strokes for bow and stern
  • canoe terminology on the river
  • how to read the river flow
  • building basic canoe skills to intermediate level

 **on the river-bring PFD, dry sack, lunch, snacks, and water.  Dress for the weather (including early evening)!

(May) Intermediate Skills Training (2 days - Part 2 of 2)

May 25 with rain date of May 26 at 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: Glen Morris to Birley Gates (Meet at canoe shed: 11:00 a.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to:

  • build and practice on day 1 lessons
  • practice paddle strokes and apply on river
  • canoe terminology and how to apply on the river
  • practice reading the river flow
  • building canoe skills to intermediate level

 **on the river-bring PFD, dry sack, lunch, snacks, and water.  Dress for the weather (including early evening)!

 

 

(May) Refresher Skills Training Course (1 day)

May 7 with a rain date of May 9  at 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: Glen Morris to Birley Gates (Meet at the canoe shed: 11:00 a.m.)

Training includes, but is not limited to review of:

  • canoe safety refresh
  • paddle stroke review
  • steering techniques
  • properly navigating and reading the river
  • reviewing/practicing canoe skills from previous training
  • leadership skills 

 **on the river-bring PFD, dry sack, lunch, snacks, and water.  Dress for the weather!

Canoe Stroke Practice Sessions

Dates: April 24, April 27, May 3 at 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: Victoria St. Pond (meet at canoe shed: 1:00 p.m.)

This is a chance to practice those rusty canoe skills to get ready for the season after a long, cold winter. No charge and everyone welcome!
