(Hello, I am a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. We are doing a study of exercise in people with low bone mass, and we are trying to spread the word that we are recruiting participants living in the KW area (as well as Markham and Saskatoon). I was wondering if you had a mailing list you could share the information with, or other ways that we could spread the word.
If you have questions, you can contact me via email or at 226 792 5672.  Thank you for your help! We really appreciate it.
Best wishes, Lora)

Hello,

We are contacting you today to let you know about a new study taking place at the Bone Health and Exercise Science Lab. Our new study is called Fortify Bones. This study is interested in looking at how different types of exercise intensity impact your bone strength.

For this study, we are looking for men and postmenopausal women who:

  • Are aged 50 or over
  • Have received two vaccines for COVID-19
  • Have low bone density, osteopenia, or osteoporosis
  • Are not taking medication for osteoporosis
  • Are willing to attend exercise sessions two times per week for 12 months

As part of this study, you will attend free exercise sessions online, or at the Toby Jenkins Applied Health Research Building at the University of Waterloo two times per week for 12 months.
In addition, we would like to complete an assessment of your physical function, have you complete some questionnaires about your health, and have you answer questions about your use of health services.
This will happen three times: at the beginning of the study, 6 months into the study, and at the end of the study.
You will be asked to complete bone mineral density and body composition scans at the beginning of the study and the end of the study.
We will collect blood samples at the beginning of the study, and 6 months into the study.
We will reimburse you for the parking or public transportation costs of attending the exercise sessions and study visits.

If you express interest in participating in this trial, you will be asked questions about:

  • Your medical history
  • Your medication use
  • Your current exercise habits

This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Board. If you are interested in finding out more about this study, please contact:
