Seniors Month–June 2024

Seniors Month has been celebrated in the month of June since 1984, and this year marks 40 years celebrating Ontario’s outstanding seniors and recognizing the positive impact they have made in our lives. (Raymond Cho, Ontario Minister for Seniors and Accessibility)

This year’s Seniors Month is another great opportunity for celebrating our seniors. To this end, The Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) Program is a program that promotes wellness, social interaction, education, and support services with the goal of keeping seniors healthy and independent through approximately 316 programs across Ontario.

Also, the new government website at Ontario.ca/seniors and the Guide to Programs and Services for Seniors offer a wealth of information for seniors.

Our Old Salts Seniors Canoe Club offers the opportunity to be active and to participate in outdoor recreational activities as well as the chance to enjoy the company of others with the same interests. The club is affiliated with the City of Waterloo and is promoted in the Active Waterloo Program Guide waterloo.ca/activewaterloo which offers a wealth of programming activities and can also be sent directly to your inbox at waterloo.ca/subscribe.

Besides canoeing, we offer other club activities and social events for fun and companionship. Two of those “not to be missed” activities this Seniors Month are the June 11: Fun Day at Paradise Lake and June 25: Pat’s Popular Potluck!

WE’D LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE!

A few things

A few things we want to share with our membership:

  1. Name Tags ~ gentle reminder to wear your tag while paddling with the club.
If you require a replacement, we will order one.
Email Bett at info@oldsalts.com; the cost is $8.00
  2. Paint for the trailer:
Does anyone have JOHN DEERE “Green” paint OR know where to get some. Frank is looking to do paint touchups obthe trailer and requires this specific paint.

    New Members
    (especially)
  3. Please wear SAFE shoes while canoeing.
As mentioned in EVERY BLOG post, flip flops and crocs are NOT considered appropriate canoe footwear.
Your safety is our first priority.
    a) If you are unfamiliar with the strokes, terminology used, or require refreshers before your paddles, PLEASE visit The Blog landing page.
    Open RESOURCES.
It lists Canoe Terminology and there are YouTube Videos with paddle strokes.b) SAFETY is our #1 Priority.
Please remember this when you get into a canoe with another member.
They trust you can handle your area in the canoe and are becoming more confident at each paddle. You are a TEAM of two on the water, please respect each other and work together to make it a fun day on the water.c) If you are having trouble reading the water, or do not understand a particular stroke, ASK your partner OR watch videos before you get into the canoe!!!! This must be important – they mentioned it twice.

    d) The Blog post will tell you the Leader to contact to register for said paddle. Anne is NOT always the one to contact for paddles.
See example below (this will be in the blog post each time)
“Please contact the Leader EMAIL:  @gmail.com OR PHONE: 519 to register for this trip. You will receive a confirmation email  to confirm your spot.
If you don’t receive a confirmation by Monday night, please contact  the trip leader to make sure you are on the list.”
