For the walk on Tuesday please meet at 10 a.m. in the parking lot for the Walter Bean Grand River Trail near the corner of Shirley Drive and Victoria St. N., Kitchener. The trail follows the Grand River towards Bingeman Park. We’ll walk for approximately 30-45 minutes and at that point we can continue or turn around and return to the parking lot. OSSCC Participation on Earth Day!

Earth day Community Cleanup –  April 24 – 26, 2020

Celebrate Earth Day as we work to remove litter from public parks and trails in Waterloo during our annual city-wide cleanup from April 24 to 26, 2020.  In the past, the OSSCC has participated so we are asking volunteers to come forward and represent the Club. If anyone is interested in taking the lead on this worthwhile project and/or would like to participate, please contact info@oldsaltsclub.com to get the ball rolling.  Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Our group can register at  Earth Day Community Cleanup using the online form, beginning March until April 21.

Free supplies and support provided.  Pick up of supplies on April 16, 17, 23 or 24.

TUESDAY WALK

Meet in the Observer parking lot at 10AM. Drive thru Elmira and the Observer is on the left hand side as you exit Elmira heading north.  This is a bike trail that many of us have done. It is an out and back walk so we will walk for an hour out then come back. Lunch afterwards.

**PLEASE READ!** {Membership Drive} March 19th!!

Hello all,

Spring is just around the corner and the Membership Drive is coming up fast! Be sure to mark your calendars.  An agenda will be sent out closer to the date.

If you know of anyone who might want to join or rejoin the club, ask them to contact info@oldsaltsclub.com to get  on our mailing list! Membership information will be sent to them!

Membership Registration forms

Although registration forms will be available at the drive, anyone who either can’t make it to the drive or wishes to fill out the forms ahead of time can find the membership renewal form here. (on the Blog under “Club Documents {Printable}) New members will be able to find the membership form here. (Web page).

      1. Please return forms & fees by April 1st if possible (April 15th at the latest) so that the membership list can be compiled as early as possible and blog access can be updated.
        (Deadline for new members is April 1st as Dryland Training starts April 2nd)
      2. Complete the form in full. Please note that both page 1 (membership) and page 2 (club waiver) need to be signed to be complete! (Last year’s forms have been destroyed as per our Privacy Policy)
      3. Volunteer! All members are encouraged to volunteer for something to contribute to the club. (You will be called upon as needed) If you are already volunteering for something, please indicate so on the form as we do not assume that what you did last year is what you are doing this year. Volunteers are a valuable component of our club that keeps it running smoothly and contributes to our success. New faces are always welcomed, encouraged and appreciated.

handbook and rules

The final version of the club Handbook & Rules is  complete and can be viewed here  on the blog under “Club Documents {Printable}“. Printed copies will be available at the Membership Drive for $10 per copy. Proceeds from the sale of the club Handbook & Rules will go towards the “Shed Relocation Project”.

If you want, you can either print it yourself with your home printer, or purchase a collated hard copy at the drive.  This book is a compilation of club rules, operating procedures, stroke and canoeing review, safety, By-laws & Constitution, previous unwritten rules, etc. that is referred to in the club waiver that you sign with the registration form. Take a look…it has lots of information that was previously undocumented!

training

Members will also be able to sign up for training at the drive.  Anyone who hasn’t taken the required training in a while, particularly the intermediate or refresher courses, might want to sign up and brush up their skills.  Our new trainer, Beth Jones, is very experienced and knowledgeable and has lots of new insights to offer.  There is always something new to learn, particularly if you want to participate safely in some of our more challenging trips planned for this year where more advanced skills are required. You will find the costs on the membership form.
2020 Trip  & Training Schedule can be found here
Training details can be found here

EMERGENCY CONTACT cARD

Just a reminder that everyone is required to have a completed “Emergency Contact Card” on them for club excursions.  If you don’t have one or need a new one because your information has changed, you can pick one up at the Membership Drive or print one from here.

BOndi

Our annual Bondi Retreat has been a tradition with the club for a long time. Unfortunately, the last two retreats were cancelled due to lack of interest. If anyone is interested in resurrecting the Fall Retreat, please show your interest by coming forward and signing up at the Membership Drive.

Social Events

Although the purpose of our Membership Drive is to sign up new and returning members, we do have have a social component where members can come out of hibernation to meet and greet fellow members and welcome new members to the club. The social committee will be providing refreshments!

Let season 2020 begin!!

TUES MORNING WALK {Feb 25th}

Dear Members,

The proposed walk for Tomorrow is a lovely area in Blair, behind Langdon Hall.

The walk is approximately 3km, it should be just the right length so we will have time for lunch before going bowling. Meet at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Blair roundabout, just as you pass the Fountain Street bridge over the Grand River. See attached map.

Please be prepared for weather and trail conditions as tomorrow there is a chance of rain. Trail might be icy, wearing icers on your boots and carrying walking stick is recommended.

Check your email in the morning, in case of cancellation due to weather.

TUES MORNING WALK (Feb 18th)

Tuesday’s walk on February 18th will be at 390 Sandy Hills drive just north of Elmira.  Take the expressway to Elmira and drive straight through the town.  Turn right at Sandy Hills (about 5 mins. outside of Elmira). There is a house on the corner where you turn. Drive  about a couple of miles then the parking is on your right. There is another loop down the road so we can walk both trails if desired.  Easy walk with slight hills. Doing both trails takes about 1 1/2 hours. Distance is 5km. To make the walk easier I  suggest you bring snowshoes. Let’s hope it doesn’t rain.

Meet there at 10am.
Dianne Wagner is the leader: 519-698-2724 or 519-635-9369 or ladydiwagner@hotmail.
Lunch can be at the deli in Elmira.

TUES MORNING WALK {UPDATE FOR FEB 11TH}

Here are some nearby trails: RIM trail, Forwell trail, Albert Mccormick trail and Iron Horse.
I will be out of town and can not lead the hike. We do have leaders for Feb 18th, 25th and March 3rd.
Enjoy your walk.

CLEANING DAY PHOTOS {Season 2019 officially over}

Cleaning day 2019 marked the official end of the 2019 canoe season as we cleaned all the canoes from both trailers inside and out.  This year was especially efficient as the trailer boxes were emptied,  vacuumed and cleared of any lingering debris and dirt. Paddles were scrubbed and equipment repaired. Everything is fresh and clean…..ready for the 2020 season, beginning with our pool training!

Many thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help! A special thanks to Eugene who volunteered his house, tools and hot water!!!! We had a lovely day, in spite of the slight chill and ended the morning with a wonderful pot-luck luncheon and plenty of hot coffee/tea!

Below are some photos that were taken on the day.  Thanks to Don Lawrence for submitting….

REMINDER: Mark you calendars for March 19th (Membership Drive).  More information will be coming in the next couple of weeks!!
