Warning: Giant Hogweed is Sprouting! #3

Last year, we printed a warning about “Giant Hogweed” at the start of our canoeing season. See here.

This year, for those of you who are hiking in rural areas, possibly near rivers and lakes, there is a good reason to watch out for these plants as they start their growing season. This may also be helpful for those of you who have cottages or like to camp near rivers or lakes.

The following warning is being sent out via email to other groups. Since we make many stops along the shoreline on both rivers and lakes during our canoe trips and we may encounter giant hogweed, it seems like a good time to share:

The giant hogweed plants have sprouted. They are presently a good contrast against the background of winter-dead and they a are larger than the other plants around.

Please check your riverside properties from the water edge to a place just above the high water lines from the last seven years.

If you find any, they can be dug with a shovel and turned over so the sun can scorch them. It is only necessary to cut the root off at 4” to 6” below the soil.

Please report any new findings with GPS coordinates and a photo to gianthogweed@rogers.com so that we can map the spread.

More info is available at the Facebook group Giant Hogweed Mitigation Project.

Pass this reminder on to all of your riverside neighbours.

Together we can keep the shorelines welcoming.

Newly updated Membership List, Version 4

For those of you who can’t wait to get out on the water and enjoy some fresh air, camraderie, and fun, here is a glimpse of what we have to look forward to:

Trip Videos 2019 (all in one place)

Latest Updates Due to Covid19

Today’s update is to talk about training, our canoe trips and membership with an updated membership list.

Training

In case you missed it……

Due to the timeline  and uncertainty we are experiencing in the coming weeks, our training with Beth Jones has been cancelled. Refunds will be issued to anyone who has paid for these lessons, including the pool sessions.

Until this crisis is over and we can get on the water, we don’t know what our training will look like this season.  For now, we can offer some virtual training……check out these links:

Club Handbook & Rules – any information you want to know about the club is in the handbook.

The Club Handbook & Rules has lots of great information in it, particularly in the “Safety” section.  Want to learn how to read the river?  There are pages dedicated to this topic with colour pictures to illustrate points. Curious about river hazards that we may encounter? Examples are shown in the handbook. There’s lots of other goodies in the handbook, so please check it out.

For those of you who don’t have access to a printer and would like a hard copy, we do have those available for $10 per book. We have limited copies, so reserve yours by contacting info@oldsaltsclub.com

Canoe Basics – Let’s get started!

One of the first things we learn in our lessons is to know our equipment. Check our our Canoe Basics page!

Know Your Strokes

Do you know your strokes and what they do? Do you know when and how to use them? This page has great illustrations and descriptions showing the different strokes (also in the Handbook).  There are also videos showing how these strokes are done and why (also used in our Dryland Training).  Until we can get on the water ourselves to practice,  the resources on the Know Your Strokes page are a very good review.

Canoeing Terminology

Every year, our canoeing instructor uses canoeing terminology that some of us have never heard of. Wonder what “river left” or “back ferry” means?

Here you will find a collection of canoeing terms that have been collected over the last couple of years and that we may have all heard at one point or another during our canoe training and outings.

QUIZ (answers found here)

What are “painters”? a) people who paint your house b) mesh that is woven for canoe seats c) rope attached to the bow and stern of canoes

What is a “lilydipper”?  a) a slow moving paddler b) the bottom portion of a paddle c) throw bag

What is a “lead boat”?  a) a boat filled with lead b) the first boat down the river c) the boat that tips first

Canoe Trips in May Cancelled

Due to the the extension of the “State of Emergency” issued by the Province of Ontario to May 12th, and possibly longer depending on how this pandemic plays out,  we are cancelling all canoe trips for the month of May to comply with social distancing protocols. Fingers crossed that during this time, all the safety measures put in place will bring positive results so that we can get our season started!

Membership

Many thanks to to everyone who have sent in their registrations/waivers/fees and those who have let us know they plan on renewing their memberships.  It is very satisfying to see so many people supporting our Club as we navigate through these uncertain times.  We will have a season…..we just don’t know when it will start. For those of you who haven’t sent in your fees or forms yet, please do so at your earliest convenience. DO NOT send anything to Wing 404 as the facility is closed and we can’t pick up mail there. Mail or drop off at 132 Kesselring Crt. Kitchener, ON N2E 2P2

Please extend a big welcome to our new members who have joined in spite of the COVID-19 crisis.

Updated membership list:  OSSCC Membership 2020

MEMBERSHIP LIST/TRAINING UPDATE

As we try to have some sense of normalcy during this abnormal time, the first version of the membership list has been posted. The list includes:

      1. Returning members who have submitted registrations forms/fees,
      2. Members who have indicated their intention to renew (fees/forms pending),
      3. New members.

If you aren’t on the list, it’s because of privacy considerations. We won’t assume you plan on coming back if you haven’t told us so.  The membership list will be updated weekly as we get notified of intentions/registrations.
Please note: Even if you have notified us of your intent to renew, please send in your registrations/fees as soon as you are able as directed in the President’s Report.

Once again, thanks everyone for supporting the Club in spite of the uncertainty we are all facing with this Covid-19 crisis!! Without members like you, our Club doesn’t exist, so “Your Membership Matters” is actually a phrase that is not only a slogan, but true! Our first priority is the safety and health of our members, so this season will truly be unique,  but we will adapt to get through it. At some point, we will be able to gather again so we can get back on the water and spend time with each other!

**TRAINING UPDATE**

Due to the timeline  and uncertainty we are experiencing in the coming weeks, our training with Beth Jones is being cancelled. Refunds will be issued to anyone who has paid for lessons, including the pool sessions.

Until we can get on the water, we do have some great resources posted on the blog that can be reviewed in the interim:

OSSCC Handbook & Rules (Hard copy available for $10 – see “It’s In The Print)
Know Your Strokes (includes videos)
Canoe Terminology
2019 Trip Videos (to remind you of how much fun we had last year!)

So until we can meet again, we will keep you posted as we get more information! If you have any questions, please post in the ‘comments‘ section below the post or email info@oldsaltsclub.com.

Stay safe. Keep healthy!

CLUB INFO/ REMINDER

In case you missed it, an OSSCC newsletter was sent to registered Club members on March 27th with the latest information and news pertinent to the new season. If you haven’t read all the reports, please do so.

Many of you have already sent in your registration forms and fees, and some of you have let us know that you plan on renewing and will be sending in your registrations/fees as soon as you are able. Thank you very much! Your support and commitment to our club is much appreciated as we navigate through these uncharted times! We also have 3 new members that are joining us this year that I’d like to extend a warm welcome to on behalf of the Club!

To those of you who haven’t let us know your intentions yet, please do so ASAP.  Our membership is the ♥heart♥ of the club. We don’t exist without you!

So we can all stay connected as we distance ourselves socially and stay safe, we would like to put up a tentative new membership list (Ver. 1) by the end of the week. Only members who have renewed their memberships, or have let us know they plan on renewing will be on this list.

As noted in the President’s report, fees for this year have not changed.  They are still $40 per person. (See President’s Report)

**NEWSFLASH** We have been informed by Jaye Kuntz that Wing 404 will be closed at least until May 4th as per notice from the Waterloo Region.
We will continue to keep you updated as we receive new information.

OSSCC Training News

Last year we welcomed Beth Jones-Cornwall as our certified moving water instructor and were very pleased with the expertise and professionalism that she brought to our club.  Long time returning club members as well as new members all benefited from Beth’s up-to- date knowledge and instruction. Beth is certified with ORCKA (the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association) and Paddle Canada as both a Moving Water and Basic Flat Water Canoeing Instructor.  She is also certified as a Wilderness First Responder and a Swift Water Rescue Technician. Beth has taught moving water courses and clinics for the Scouts, Girl Guides, Waterloo Wellington Canoe Club, various school boards in Ontario, along with other associations. Beth has also guided private canoe trips and courses for over 16 years, so she is well qualified.

Dryland/Orientation Training + Pool Training

For those new to the club, it is expected that you will participate in the two hour dry land training and orientation.  At this time, we will discuss in detail the expectations of the club, how we operate, logistics, safety, gear, working together with your partner in the canoe and basic canoe strokes.  Also, new members are expected to participate in the two pool training sessions where we will again focus on safety, rescue techniques and some basic canoe strokes. There will then be three training sessions on the Victoria Street pond where we will put into practise what has been learned in the pool.

Basic Level (Flat & Moving Water)

By that time you will be ready for Beth’s two half day basic level courses.  She will review canoe strokes and techniques both in the bow and in the stern for both flat water and moving water.    Also, she will go over risk management considerations, in current manoeuvres, river reading and self rescue. You will be introduced to the term “MITH” M-I-T-H  and eddy turns, S-Turns, and peel outs. Remember, we are mostly on rivers with currents, some faster than others, so even if you feel that you have canoeing experience, it is always good to refresh those skills, review the terminology and be open to learning new techniques and manoeuvres.  Long time members are also invited to take the basic level course if you would like to improve your skills. Training is intensive for new members, but it will make your canoeing experience with the Old Salts much more enjoyable and safe for all.

Intermediate Skills Training

Next, Beth will offer the two half days of Intermediate Skills Training.  These are offered on moving water for members who have successfully completed the basic level course and would like to further improve their water strokes, manoeuvres, river knowledge, and rescuing techniques.   It is necessary for members to have both the basic and intermediate training to participate in all our excursions. With just the basic, you may be excluded from some of our more challenging trips, as we may feel they may be too dangerous without adequate preparation.  Once again, long time members of the club are encouraged to take the intermediate training to practise their skills and get updated, professional feedback on their canoeing techniques and water reading ability.

Refresher Training

Finally, Beth is offering the Refresher Training Course.  She will challenge us to use our knowledge and skills to make our own decisions on the water and become competent trip leaders.  Beth will review strokes and the “MITH” technique, risk management, moving water manoeuvres and river reading. This course is especially important for all trip organizers, leaders, trippers, trainers, members who have taken the safety course, and anyone who wants to review the skills and techniques they have learned in the past.  Anyone who has not taken a course in the last few years is strongly encouraged to take this Refresher training to update his or her skills.

We, as a club, strongly encourage all members to sign up for at least one course.  It will make for happier, safer and more enjoyable excursions for you, your canoe partner and all those on the outing with you.

If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for the training courses by contacting me at:  lynnwarmington1@gmail.com or call me at 519-846-9243.

Thank you.

Lynn

**UPDATE**
With the indefinite closure of Wing 404, Dryland Training will be cancelled this year. The City of Kitchener has also closed it’s facilities until April 5th, so in all likelihood, the Pool Training may also be cancelled if the city’s pools aren’t reopened. We will keep you up to date should there be any changes with any of the training with Beth Jones due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Trip Co-Ordination

The Trip Co-ordinating Committee got together in the off season and planned a full schedule of trips for the 2020 season. You can check out the schedule here: 2020-2021 Training & Trip Schedule.

trip days & times

Every Tuesday we have a canoe trip on various rivers close to home and some further afield. Every other Thursday we have “Easy Breezy” canoe trips for those who prefer canoeing on still water such as ponds and small lakes. For more details, see “Canoe Trip Times

We have 2 trailers that carry 6 canoes each and one trailer also carries a kayak. If car topping is required, the driver who car tops will have their trip fee refunded back to them.

We meet at the shed on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. for an 8:45 departure. There is a $6 fee for each trip and a $9 fee for longer trips (as indicated by *). On longer trips, we meet at the shed at 8:00 a.m. for an 8:15 a.m. departure. (Money from the trip fees is used to pay mileage to the towers).

Thursday Easy Breezy outings meet at the shed at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:15 departure. These outings are always on calm water.

trip organizing

We have members that volunteer to organize the various canoe trips. There is a detailed, step by step “how to” on the blog on how to do this.  You will find that here under “Trip Organization Steps” on our blog under Trip Organizing.  We will assist you if you have never done this before. Hopefully we can get some new people to try their hand at leading a trip. If you want more information, want to volunteer to lead a trip or want to offer your services as a tower, please indicate this on your registration form as well as contacting Anne at annewoolner@hotmail.com .  Please consider volunteering to organize a trip, especially if you’ve been a member for a while!. In the past, trips have been cancelled when no one stepped up to be the organizer!

are you ready?

We also have training for both  new and returning members to keep your skills sharp and possibly learn something new.  Lynn Warmington has organized all of our training –Basic, intermediate and Refresher courses. For more information contact Lynn at lynnwarmington1@gmail.com  or check out her report for more details.

Anne Woolner, Trip Co-Ordinator

Social Committee

The Social Committee’s original function was to provide food at our large group gatherings.  And in less contagious times you would have enjoyed lots of goodies like coffee, tea, juice, homemade cookies, squares and loaves, cheese and crackers and a fruit tray at our Membership Drive in March and again at our annual meeting in Oct. (hopefully we will still have that one).

Since the early days of the club our role has gradually expanded so we now provide additional social events beyond the regular weekly canoe outings.

Paradise Lake

Our next scheduled get together is a day at Paradise Lake on June 16 at the Y Camp.  For $20 we enjoy coffee and muffins on arrival, a morning of canoeing on their lake in their canoes, with a leader provided by the camp, followed by a hot lunch. We usually have time to tour the lake and admire the awesome cottages, before we settle in to some competitive games and attempts at synchronized canoe formations.  No talent is necessary for this.  Even the least-experienced beginners are able to participate. It’s best to bring your own life jacket, though they do have some there if you forget.  After lunch there is time for a swim or some more canoeing, or you can head home.

Mini Golf Tournament

In August we have our annual mini golf tournament held at Max’s Golf Academy on King St. near Market Rd.  We meet at 9:30 before it gets too hot and are divided into teams for a friendly competition.  There are usually some small prizes and consolation chocolate.

Corn Maze

In Oct. when our canoe schedule is finished, we plan a visit to Nauman’s farm for an opportunity to find your way through their corn maze.  Again, we are divided into small groups so you are never lost alone.  This is followed by an optional lunch at Homestyle Diner.

Car Rally

We’ve been fortunate the last few years to have a car rally in the fall.  It depends on volunteers willing to prepare a route.  We meet at the 404 at 9 a.m. and divide into teams of 2, 3, or 4 to a car and leave about 5 minutes apart.  We follow clues to find the route and answer questions related to the sights along the way.  After a couple of hours we find our way to the destination where we enjoy a potluck lunch while the organizer uses the answer sheets to determine the winners.

Geocaching

In Nov. we often have a  morning of geocaching led by some experienced volunteers.  It’s fun to try and find the hidden treasures.  There is usually an optional lunch  out afterwards.

Christmas Party

In Dec. the highlight of our social season is our Christmas Lunch at Luther Village in Waterloo.  Last year for $35 we enjoyed a full turkey dinner with dressing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy, cranberries, and two salads, coffee or tea and Christmas Pudding and fruit for dessert.  A cash bar was available. We had a mixer game at the beginning and some other party games after lunch.  Members were invited to make optional contributions to the food bank, toy drive, and /or bring a door prize. Our members were very generous.  We even had musical entertainment by one of our more talented members and we ended the afternoon by singing some favourite Christmas carols.

Bowling

In Jan. and Feb. we had an afternoon of bowling each month at Victoria Lanes in Kitchener.   No talent was necessary.  It was just a way to get out and get together.  There were some chocolate prizes for a hidden score and for high and low female and male bowlers each game. There was an optional coffee gathering afterwards across the street at City Bakery.

Hiking

Besides events run by the Social Committee there is a walking group that meets Tues. mornings at 9:30 from Nov. to April.  They have been to the Floradale  Dam, Sandy Hills Regional Forest, Health  alley Trail, Langdon Hall, Snider’s  Flats, and many more.  After the hike they usually go for lunch at a restaurant in the area of the hike.  Unfortunately this is now also on hold due to the Coronavirus.

Hopefully this trying situation will soon be over and we can get back to our regular social schedule.

Best of health, everyone.

Pam & Brenda

Words From the President

This message is much different than the one I was going to give at the Membership Drive. Much has changed in the last two weeks that directly impacts our Club so I would like to address these issues. I direct this message to our  members who currently have access to our Blog.

First, I hope this message finds you all in good health and coping well with the social distancing challenges that have been presented to us. These are unprecedented times that will generate many conversations down the road.  In the meantime, please stay positive, keep in touch with each other and above all stay safe as we all look forward to sunny days ahead and getting back on the water!

I’m sure you have all received and read the MEMBERSHIP UPDATE announcement that Carol posted on Monday. If you haven’t read it, please do. This post outlines how we are supposed to renew our memberships this year in light of the current COVID-19 situation.

To clarify some questions that have been raised, please note that the membership fees have not changed: the fee is still $40 per person.  The Alumni membership (members for 20+ years) is still $25 per person. Cheques should be made out to : Old Salts Seniors Canoe Club

A notice was also sent out with regards to WING 404.  The City of Waterloo has closed all its facilities until further notice, which includes Wing 404. Therefore, to avoid confusion, I ask that you ignore the address stated on the form (Wing 404) and send/or drop off your membership renewal and fee to my home address. I am fortunate to still get home delivery, so it will be placed in my mail box. The same goes if you prefer to drop it off personally.

OSSCC
c/o 132 Kesselring Court
Kitchener, ON  N2E 2P2

We have been told that any membership renewals that were sent to Wing 404 will be held once received by Jaye Kuntz. (Manager at Wing 404)

For more information on “membership”, please refer to the Membership Report.

This will be an interesting year for us as there are so many unknowns that we have never dealt with as a club. It’s not a question of WILL we get on the water this year, it’s WHEN we get on the water. The Trip Coordinating Committee , lead by Anne Woolner, got together in the off season and planned some great trips. Some are new and others are our old favourites. Fingers crossed that we will get to do them, barring COVID-19 restrictions or inclement weather! Check out the schedule here: 2020-2021 Training and Trip Schedule. For more information, check out the Trip Co-Ordinator Report.

I also ask that any of our members who have been around for more than a year, to please consider volunteering to be a “Trip Organizer” for our canoe trips this year. We have a whole resource section on this blog dedicated to making this easy to do with lots of information, including a specific “how-to” detailing exactly how to organize a trip as well as a check list to simplify the process. You can find that here: Trip Organizing
Many thanks to Dianne Wagner, Lynn Warmington and Anne Woolner for putting this together and updating!

Finally, I’d like to thank you for your continued support of our Club.  Our board was told quite recently at one of our meetings how important our club is to the city.  As active members we not only participate in physical exercise but also have a positive contribution toward our emotional fitness and mental health by keeping connected and caring for each other.  Life has a tendency to provide us with some challenges along the way.  All we can do is to deal with them as best we can by staying calm, positive and know that we will get through this together as a club.

Respectively,

Eugene Marion, President
OSSCC
