OSSCC Web Site

Take time to visit the OSSCC Web page some time and forward the link to anyone you think might be interested in our club.

The web page tells everyone who we are as a club:

Main/Landing page

What’s Coming?

We are hoping to utilize the blog as a “library” where we can house club resources in one convenient space for members to access.  At some point, we hope to upload trip maps, trip descriptions and other resources for members to use, particularly Trip Organizers.

We are also developing a section where we hope to harness the memories and experience from our older members in a section called “The Way We Were”. If anyone has any photos or memorabilia, etc. to share, contact Bill Butler at info@oldsaltsclub.com.

The Web Site also has lots of resources (as described above) and is a great way to let interested seniors know we exist and what we are about.

So…..instead of just reading the email notification without visiting the blog itself, take the time to click on the blog post and even make a comment or suggestion. It is worth it!

LUTHER MARSH TRIP DETAILS (August 27th)

Our trip on Tuesday August 27th is to the Luther Marsh . It will take about an hour from Wing 404 to get to our destination. The trip is open to all who enjoy flat water paddling accompanied by the occasional wind gust .

The Luther Marsh Wildlife Management Area is a biological treasure in the headwaters area of the Grand River watershed. The 5,900-hectare property centres on the 1,400-hectare Luther Lake, created by Luther Dam, built in 1954. Surrounding it are wetlands, fields and forests providing habitat to a wide variety of birds, animals, plants and trees. It is one of the best bird-watching spots in Ontario so bring binoculars if you have some. We will put in and take out at the north east side, near the dam so there will be no shuttle.

The weather : Light rain starts tonight, both here in Kitchener and in the Arthur area. It will be light raining while we’re on the lake, with a steady rain not beginning until afternoon. Temperature 21, feels like 24. Bring sunscreen and lots of water, rain gear and also see “What to Bring on a Canoe Excursion”in the Blog.

The cost of this trip is $6. Meet at the shed by 8:30 am for a 8:45 am departure.

Trip Organizers and towers are Chris Sheppard and Alberta Piche
BE SURE TO CHECK / Tuesday morning for possible changes although lightening is not in the forecast fortunately.

Tuesday, August 20th – Grand River {Glen Morris to Birley Gates}

Tomorrow’s trip should be another good one. The flow is around 37 and may change a bit by morning, but is nowhere near the summer low. We should have a great paddle as this part of the river provides lots of opportunity for us to brush up on reading the river and practice skills learned during our lessons. Since most of us have done this section of the Grand River during training, we know what to expect, but realize it can change.

The weather forecast: Sunny in the morning and early in the afternoon then a mix of sun and cloud with 30 percent chance of showers late in the afternoon. High 28.  Bring sunscreen and lots of water!

EASY BREEZY- GRAND RIVER-August 15th

Easy Breezy Trip on Thursday, August 15 is on the Grand River from Moyer’s Landing, Blair to Riverbluffs Park, Cambridge

Paddling time is approximately 1 hours- Shuttle time 20 minutes.  See enclosed maps.

This is a an easy paddle, just over one hours, depending on how many stops we take on the way.

After a short distance, we will come to where the Speed River joins the Grand (on River left).  We will pass the Galt Country Club also on the left.  If you are a golfer, bring the ball retriever, you can scoop some golf balls lost by the players. On River right are limestone cliffs and if you look carefully you will see Devil Creek Waterfall.

We will need to pay attention to spot channel passage ways, as we will encounter some shallow areas. Look for the dock at River Bluffs Park on our right, here we exit. We will stop here for lunch, hopefully under a tree.

Remember to bring the usual canoe gear as well as water, snacks/lunch, sunscreen and hat.

Weather conditions  should be ideal, Sunny. High 22Celsius.
