Club paddles return Sept. 19

While folks are enjoying Bondi Village this week, this post serves as a reminder “there are still a few more paddles to be enjoyed before canoe cleanup!”

Updates once Bondi trip has ended on September 15.

Rockwood ~ paddle or hike ~ September 7th

September 7th  at 1:00pm 

Options: Canoe, hike or come to socialize 

More Details: 
Everyone who has EVER been an Old Salt Senior Canoe Club member, is welcome to come out to this traditional paddle and wiener roast at the Rockwood Conservation area.

You can choose to:
canoe a very easy picture perfect route up to the falls and see the old mill, walk on the well defined trails overlooking the lake OR
just sit and socialize 

If you are canoeing:
Bring  your typical canoe gear and meet us at the 404 shed at 1PM so we know how many canoes to bring.

If you are not canoeing:
You  can either meet at the shed at 1pm and carpool OR
meet us at Rockwood at 2 to 2:30 down by the bridge by the beach.

Potluck location: Hopefully campsite #4.
Cost to Enter Park: There is an admission fee  $5.75 for seniors.
What to Bring:  Potluck item, cutlery and beverage and your lawn chair.
Dinner Served:  At 5pm.

Register: Please let Marilynn ( mlynn25@outlook.com ) know, so  we know how many hot dogs to buy. 

DIRECTIONS:
leaving the shed turn right on Weber, right onto Northfield, right
onto the expressway , take the Victoria St – HWY 7 exit- all the way to Guelph-turn right on Victoria N then left back onto HWY 7 into Rockwood turn right onto Falls Avenue and into the park.

Thursday August 31 ~ Night Paddle

Trip:  Moonlight Paddle
Pittock Conservation Area (Reservoir/Lake) – Woodstock

Basic training required.

Cost: $8 (no envelopes necessary)
Time:
Meet at the shed at 6 p.m., sharp

Special Note:    Let’s make this a fun evening.
We encourage you to bring your own flashlight, headlight and glow in the dark bracelets/necklaces or other light mechanism to illuminate the night sky.    Feel free to decorate your canoe with lights.

Trip Details:
We will circumnavigate the reservoir and explore along the shoreline. Water flows through the dam and into the Thames River (southwest side)

Carpool:
Please make car pooling arrangements before we meet on Thursday morning. If you carpool, please reimburse your driver ($10 would be appropriate for this trip). If you drive in a different car each way, please reimburse both drivers.

Don’t Forget:
Bring dinner/snack, water, hat, appropriate clothing, PFD and proper foot wear- no flipflops
Insect repellant is highly recommended as this is a dusk/night paddle.

Tuesday, August 29th Paddle

Intermediate  training is a must for this trip/required. 

Cost:$15 (no envelopes necessary)
Time:  Meet at the shed @ 8am 

Trip Details:
Paddle down the Big Otter Creek from Vienna to Port Burwell, Ontario. The creek is a tributary of the Thames River System. 
It starts somewhere near Norwich and snakes through Tillsonburg until it finally empties in Lake Erie in the town of Port Burwell.
The trip will focus on a 17 kilometer section of the creek.
We will pass through Carolian forest and embrace the wonderful natural beauty and wildlife/bird life in the area.

**For those interested, we will stop at Simply Scoops (Ice Cream Shop & Eatery) at the end of the paddle.

Special Note:
There may be a few minor liftovers and a possible minor portage along the route. This may require paddlers to exit then re-enter their canoe.
Extra caution is required. If members are uncomfortable exiting their canoe, this paddle may not be suitable for you.
Additional Parking Fee:
$10 per canoe/ vehicle in order to park at Port Burwell Marina (this is the only suitable put out in the area).

Trip:  Cootes Paradise at Princess Point Hamilton 
Basic training required.

Time: Meet at the shed @ 9:00am  

Trip Details:
 Surprisingly this beautiful sanctuary of flora and fauna lies in the middle of Canada’s most densely populated Golden Horseshoe area. A leisurely paddle takes you through the heart of the Royal Botanical Garden’s surrounding lands but with civilization never far from view. There may be a parking fee of $3 per hour/car.

Please make car pooling arrangements before we meet on Thursday morning.  If you carpool, please reimburse your driver ($5-10 would be appropriate for this trip). If you drive in a different car each way, please reimburse both drivers. 

Bring lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, PFD and proper foot wear- no flipflops

Time: Meet at the shed @ 8:00am 

Trip Details:
This area is called the “Canadian Amazon” as we meander through Norfolk County towards Lake Erie’s Long Point.
This is a longer trip that does involve maneuvering skills around trees and other obstacles as well as stamina.
There is no place to exit the canoes except for the end of the trip. We could end it with a swim at the beach (paid parking or free in the park with a park pass).

Please make car pooling arrangements before we meet on Tuesday morning.   If you carpool, please reimburse your driver ($20 would be appropriate for this trip). If you drive in a different car each way, please reimburse both drivers.

Remember: Bring lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, PFD and proper foot wear- no flip flops.
