Pond Training

Tuesday, April 19th
Thursday April 21st.

If you haven’t already, please sign up for these sessions by contacting Lynn Warmington  at lynnwarmington1@gmail.com or 519-400-0388 so we know how many canoes will be required and can arrange for towing.  We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these sessions to practice strokes and other skills before the lessons with Beth begin. This is especially important for our newer members.  All members are welcome, but please let Lynn know if you plan on coming.

Meet at the shed (Wing 404) at 1:00 p.m. Cost is $2 per day.
Next pond training dates are: Tuesday, April 26th and Thursday, April 28th
All members are welcome, but we ask that our new (2021 & 2022) members come out at least twice, (but all four times  would be great practice before the river training begins)

All training dates can be found here: Training Dates

Trip Leader & Tower Training Workshops

These workshops are for anyone who has signed up or is wondering what’s involved in leading a trip or towing the canoe trailers before they commit. We implemented some new processes during covid, some of which we are keeping, and we  want to make sure everyone is consistent on how things are done. These jobs are very important since we can’t have canoe trips without them. We hope you will join us. Please let Anne know if you are coming.

Meet at the shed (behind Wing 404) on April 20th at 1:30 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Anne Woolner at annewoolner@hotmail.com (this was rescheduled from April 14th which was cancelled)

Activity for Next Week & Photos!

Welcome cross country skiers and snowshoers!

When: Tuesday, March 1st  1:00 p.m.

Where:  Rockway Golf Course,

            625 Rockway Dr, Kitchener, ON N2G 3B5

The WRNSC maintains free cross country ski trails at Rockway Golf Course. Trails are groomed for skate and classic techniques. Please ski only on the groomed trails posted below. No walking on ski trails. The trails start from the parking lot off of Rockway. Drive. https://wrnsc.ca › trail-map

Trails are usually groomed after large snowfalls, or before club programs. Please note grooming is done by volunteers. You can check conditions before heading to the trails. Feedback from Old Salts members indicate they would like to ski flat trails and avoid hills. Everyone please feel free to ski on the trails you wish. Those snowshoeing will pick their own trails and avoid walking on the ski trails please.

Please email Agnes at agnesj1976@gmail.com or Alicia at alicia2smith@gmail.com (519-741-7986 text) if interested in going. Check our blog and your emails to ensure this activity is still on.  We may lose our snow this week and have to reschedule.  Spring is on its way!

Have a great week! Stay safe.

Membership Update & Other News!

Hello all,

There have been several inquiries regarding membership for the 2022 season. Thank you for your continued interest and support.

To date, there is nothing to report since the news keeps changing daily along with the mandates. The Board is meeting at the end of this month to decide how we are going to proceed and will send out a message to our membership once a plan is in place.  Do not send us anything yet.

If you know anyone who is interested in joining, have them send an email to info@oldsaltsclub.com to get their names on the mailing/waiting list. (They will be sent an email with membership updates when available.)

In the meantime, social activities are being planned, including “BOWLING FOR FUN AND CHOCOLATE” {LINK} planned next Tues. Feb. 22nd. Contact Brenda Welch if you are interested.

Today, a group met to horseshoe at Alicia Smith’s farm. It looks like they all had a great day with lots of sunshine and fresh air. Here are some photos that Alicia sent to me. Many thanks to Alicia for organizing this event!

See What’s Happening With Club Activities!

Social events are happening while we wait for the canoe season to start, so mark your calenders for the following:

SNOWSHOEING SOCIAL

When: Tuesday, Feb. 15th at 1:00 p.m.

Where: Alicia Smith’s Farm (directions below)

Details: There are no groomed trails. It can be a good workout or slower one keeping close to the house. Everyone can roam freely or as a group in the fields or our woods.  If the weather is poor and our laneway is shut down, I would have to send out an email that morning, so check your emails. Club participants should be aware that they are participating at their own risk.

Address/Directions: 3294 Weimar Line, Wellesley, Ontario  *note: We are just 4 km. from Erbsville, so do not go to Wellesley.  Take Kressler (left at the David Fischer Residence), right onto Weimar Line, travel 1.5 km. and there is a smashed mailbox on the left. We are set back, so if people are afraid of the laneway, park safely on the road and hike in.

RSVP: Alicia Smith at alicia2smith@gmail.com or call 519-699-9260 cell 519-741-7986.

It would be nice to know if people are wanting to come on Tuesday and approximately how many in order to ensure we have enough parking.

The Kissing Bridge hike was a great success and those who attended had lots of fresh air,  great exersize and a beautiful day.
If you want more of the same, comment below and if you can help organize/lead or have any suggestions of other activities, make use of the comments section below the blog post  (responding to the email post by clicking “reply” takes you to an unmonitored email box which no one will see or respond to)

Walk & Talk

A chance to get together with some of our old friends, and new friends, in the outdoors.

Tues.  Feb.8 at 1:30 pm.

Meet in Elmira, in the parking lot for the Guelph to Goderich Trail (this section also known as the Kissing Bridge Trail). The parking lot is just beside the building for the Woolwich Observer. You could use their address for your GPS:  It is 20B Arthur St. N, Elmira. N3B 1Z9.

Athur St( Hwy 21) is the main street in Elmira. If you come through town from the south,    (from KW or St. Jacob’s),  the lot is past the downtown, not far past Church St.  Turn left into the driveway that looks like it is for the Observer building.

The trail is very flat and wide.  It’s an easy walk.  We’ll go up for about an hour and then back. You could bring icers in case it is slippery that day.   Likely there will be a fast and slow group and the keeners can go farther.

Optional coffee stop, after.  Make sure you have a mask and vaccine passport with you if you would like to come.

Please let Brenda Welch at brendajwelch@hotmail.com or 519-884-2168, know if you plan to come, so we can watch for you. But last minute arrivals are welcome too.

Christmas Party Reminder/Update

This is the last week to sign up for the Christmas Party on

Tues.  Dec.7th at 12 noon. You can find all pertinent details on the Christmas Party Invitation {link} blog post. (The email notification went out on November 12th)

The deadline to notify Brenda Welch (519-884-2168 or
brendajwelch@hotmail.com) is Tues. Nov. 30th. Please

feel free to contct me directly with any questions.

For those with Covid Concerns:

Chef Duff and his staff are all double vaccinated and so are we. We will be the only ones there besides the staff. Chef Duff assures me “You will be the only people in the building so this is much safer than going to another restaurant or even the grocery store or Walmart.” Everyone must bring proof of vaccination, picture ID, and wear a mask except when eating and drinking at the table. We will likely be in tables of six.

Riversong is a lovely property on the Conestoga River. You are
welcome to take a walk around the grounds before or after our event,
at your  own risk.
