Back Country Camping & Canoeing

Hi fellow members,

This is a final request to members interested in committing to join us for a

Back Country Camping/Canoeing Trip

Where: beautiful George Lake in Killarney Provincial Park

When:  from June 16 through to June 20.

I will be making our Park reservation shortly and need your response by this Sunday March 30th.

At present, we have seven participants (5 men, 2 women).

THIS IS A LAST CALL! If you are interested and have questions, please call, text, or email Bruce Williams at 519-501-1990 or brucewms@yahoo.com

Hope to hear from you!

SALE: Need a PFD?

SALE!  SALE! SALE!

Barbarian Sports Wear, Inc.                                                              575 Trillium Drive, Kitchener

Date and Time: April 26@ 8:00 am

While the doors open at 8 am, one of our members suggests getting there around 7:30I went two years ago for my PFD, got inside around 8:10, and got the last size S jacket. There were no medium sizes and only a few Large ones left. Going early is important! The sale price was around $70 for my lifejacket—about a 40% discount.  These are not cheap, but they are excellent quality with wide shoulder straps  (needed to pull one out of the water, a point that stayed with me from Dry Land Training).

Another member reports: There is 4 times as much sportswear as PFD on sale, so could be of interest even if not needing a PFD. I think last year it was a bag of whatever you wanted for a set price like $50.

Each canoe holds a story that when put together, collectively tells the history of Canada. The museum’s two-storey, 65,000 square foot, building is a purpose-built facility that houses the collection and activities, helping to preserve history through display, restoration, and appreciation of the canoe. The five-acre site provides stunning west-facing views of Little Lake, a connection to the Trans Canada Trail, and is surrounded by public parks.

If time allows, there’ll be an optional hike around the grounds.
The CCM contains a self-guided exhibition along with a merchandise store and cafe.

For our club to work, we need volunteers to run it, particularly  Trip Leaders {link}and Towers {link} for both Flat Water trips and more challenging ones. Without volunteers, we don’t have any trips.

When you complete your registration form, don’t forget to check the boxes on the volunteer part of the form!
Don’t see anything that interests you?….make a suggestion and take the lead!

To make volunteering less daunting, everyone who volunteers to tow or lead a trip will asked to attend an informal training workshop to learn exactly what’s involved.
This will ensure consistency in how things are done and will give volunteers the opportunity to have any questions or concerns addressed, particularly any changes in procedure. Volunteers will be informed of the the date(s) .

Finally, we look forward to seeing the friendly faces of members, both old and new,—and to having a wonderful 2025 canoe season!

Mark Wednesday, March 12, on your calendars!

Back Country Canoeing/Camping

From your President, Bruce Williams

Hello fellow members,

I am writing the membership, today, to introduce you to a new committee I have formed with the approval of your Board of Directors. This new committee, that I’ll chair, is called the Back Country Canoeing/Camping group (BCCC). The committee consists of myself, our VP Michael de Andrade, and members Doug Arthur and Roger Suffling.

The introduction of this group is to help include another form of canoeing for our membership to engage in that will expand our trips to include camping, exploring, and socializing beyond the day trips that we presently do. It will also, open up a new activity to explore beyond southwestern Ontario to other areas of Ontario. These trips will encompass a number of days and require planning and booking by the committee.

As a committee, we have had our first meeting to cover items necessary for our trips, such as number of days, number of trips for the year, camping/canoeing gear, etc. We have decided on one or possibly two trips this year, depending on how well this activity is received. Our first trip is planned for Monday, June 16th through to Friday, June 20th, and will be on George Lake in Killarney Provincial Park. We hope to hold another trip in late August.

Doug and I did this trip last year and I posted pictures on the blog for members to enjoy. I know there are members who have experience in doing this activity and are willing to join us in making these trips a success going forward. There is no better enjoyment than listening to the call of the loon on the lake or the camaraderie of sitting around the campfire popping popcorn or roasting hotdogs or the occasional marshmallow while enjoying your favorite beverage.

As your BCCC committee, we eagerly await any questions or comments and any concerns will be addressed immediately. NO experience is necessary, and only your personal requirements (sleeping bag, toiletries, etc.) are required. Gender requirements will be met. Due to early booking reservations and site limitations, we will require early confirmation of attendance and a non-refundable payment for the trip. The trip will go rain or shine. In order to book a site, we will need confirmation of attendance by March 31, 2025.
